FIELD GRAY OFFICER'S "SCHIFFMUTZE"

   The "schiffmutze" (literally "boat cap") was the standard German army field cap before the war.  Although it was officially replaced by the visored M43 cap in 1943, it remained popular with artillery and assault gun crews, who found the visor of the M43 cap got in the way when looking through gun sights and scissors telescopes.
     The field gray wool model was worn by both Army and Waffen SS (even though the SS had a variant pattern of their own) and had a flap that folded down  to cover the ears in cold weather.  The officer's version was distinguished by silver its silver trim.

HAT SIZES
Unlike modern caps, these caps are not adjustable. To order a cap you need to specify size. Don’t be embarrassed if you don’t know your hat size — in this day of adjustable one-size-fits-all baseball caps most of us never think about it.
