GERMAN FIELD CAPS
The famous German visored field cap was first issued in 1943, following the success of the SS camouflage version introduced the year before. Modeled on the short-visored cap long worn by mountain troops, it was an immediate success on all fronts. Two of the most popular versions were the desert tan model worn by the Afrikakorps and the reversible camouflage (green for summer and brown for autumn) worn by the Waffen SS. The Afrikakorps cap has the same red cotton lining as the originals. The field gray wool model was worn by both Army and Waffen SS and had a fold-down flap to cover the ears that was secured by 2 small aluminum buttons at the front. The same cap in black was worn by Army and SS panzer crews.
HAT SIZES Unlike modern caps, these caps are not adjustable. To order a cap you need to specify a size. Don’t be embarrassed if you don’t know your hat size — in this day of adjustable one-size-fits-all baseball caps most of us never think about it. INSIGNIA All of our caps are sold without insignia. M43 FIELD CAPS These fine quality wool caps are produced by a small factory in Germany that has been making military caps for many years. They are extremely high quality with each style patterned after the originals and incorporating the details of war-time issued caps. The wool is the proper color and type, in black, field-grey and blue grey with the correct standard cotton twill lining and makers marks.

M-38 & M-40 OVERSEAS CAPS ("SCHIFFMUTZE") These fine quality wool caps are produced by a small factory in Germany that has been making military caps for many years. They are extremely high quality with each style patterned after the originals and incorporating the details of war-time issued caps. The wool is the proper color and type, in black, field-grey and blue grey with the correct standard cotton twill lining and makers marks. The army M-38 caps feature the characteristic scalloped cut in front, plain for enlisted and piped in braided aluminum silver wire around the crown and scallop for officers. The Luftwaffe M-40 caps are similar to the SS version in cut with silver braided wire piping added for the officers model. The M-40 SS style cap was used exclusively by the SS, differing from the M-38 model in the cut of the top and sides. The enlisted is plan while the officers model is piped in braided aluminum silver wire around the crown.

BEVO INSIGNIA FOR FIELD CAPS *(Bevo* was the abbreviation for Bandfabrik Ewald Vorsteher, a principal maker of wartime woven insignia)** Wehrmacht insignia was worn on the front of the field gray and panzer black wool M43 caps, above the buttoned flap. Initially the SS skull was worn on the front, and the eagle on the left side of the flap; after 1943 the eagle was moved to the front above the skull. Both one and two piece insignia were used by the Army and SS. Insignia were not supposed to be worn on camouflage uniforms, but this regulation was widely ignored and the SS summer green and autumn yellow camouflage insignia, though unofficial, were often seen on these caps.

If you need to replace the liner in your helmet, these replacement liners are now available in sizes; 58, 59, 60 & 61. They have genuine leather webbing attached to a correctly made steel band that is complete with proper maker & size markings. Chinstraps are made from the correct gray colored soft leather with original style grommets, buckles and snaps. The liner bolts are the early war, spanner variety.
