  The term "bullion" describes embroidery done with gold or silver wire. It is usually embellished with several different textures of wire to create different reflections. Because the work is done by hand it is quite expensive, but the rich visual effect of fine bullion embroidery has always been worth the extra cost.

    NCO and enlisted shoulder straps were green in the Army, blue-gray in the Luftwaffe, and black in the Waffen SS. All were edged in the appropriate color for the branch of service (called waffenfarbe). Officers' shoulder boards were of silver cord, straight for junior officers (captain and below) and braided for senior officers (major and above), and were also edged or backed in the branch color: white for infantry, pink for panzer, and grass green for panzer grenadier. Generals had mixed gold and silver cords; the backing was red for the Army, white for the Luftwaffe, and light gray for the Waffen SS. The rank stars were gold on silver straps and silver on gold ones; NCO stars were silver, but smaller than the officer's.

   Our officer's and enlisted shoulder boards are converted East German types. The generals’ boards are made for us to World War II specifications (which is why they cost so much more).

COLLAR TABS

  The distinctive color for Army generals was red, used as the background color for their collar tabs and shoulder boards. The collar device for generals is an old one dating back to the early days of the Prussian army, and is still worn by German generals today. 

    The Luftwaffe being a new branch of service, its designs were new. General officer’s insignia was gold on white. Lower ranking officers all had silver embroidery on a background indicating their branch of service. Flying officers (pilots and flight crews) and paratroops both have yellow backing.
