IRON CROSS FIRST CLASS

  The qualifications for award of each class of the Iron Cross, as for all German awards, were specified in detail. A recipient worked his way up step by step. One could not be awarded the Iron Cross First Class unless one had already received the Second Class. As subsequent levels were attained, regulations specified that all classes were to be worn, even on field uniforms. A Knight's Cross holder would also wear his Iron Cross First Class on the left breast pocket and the ribbon of the Iron Cross Second Class in his buttonhole.
   Bullion embroidered crosses were private purchase items popular with pilots and panzer crews who had trouble with the metal crosses snagging on cockpits and tank hatches.
